Black Jack is possibly one of the most favored games played in betting houses. Black jack is also known as "twenty one" or "pontoon." The game is a mix of chance and skills coupled with choices. The card game has adapted over a period of time. Players have specialized in specific skills like "card counting," which allows them to turn the odds of the game in the players favor. The game has been around since the 1700s. References can be found in historical documents to a game referred to as "vingt-et-un," which in French means 21, and is considered the ancestor to black jack.

The card game was originally not very popular in the US. This led to the gambling houses attempting a variety of features like offering a bonus like a 10-to-1 payout, if the black jack player was dealt an ace of spades and a black jack. The jack could be either the jack of spades or clubs. After the game became well-liked, the bonus payout soon vanished from the game.

Any hand which achieves a total of 21 is considered a winner. The total can not be in excess of twenty-one, in which case the hand is considered to be "bust." The goal of every player is to beat the house. If the blackjack player and the dealer both have the same score, it is referred to as a "push" (a tie), with neither the blackjack player or the house coming away with a win on the hand.
