Twenty-One Essential Basics – Part Two
Feb 15th, 2010 by Glenn

We carry on with our article on the abc’s of twenty-one. In the preceding article we covered the concept of twenty-one, hitting, holding with the current hand and how to double down. In part 2 we will discuss splitting, surrendering and insurance.

Split: if a player is assigned two cards of the same value (2 eights for instance) the player may separate them to create two separate hands. If you decide to split your hand you’ll have to place a new wager equal to the initial wager.

Surrender: Some casinos will let individuals to surrender the hand they have been handed along with half of the initial bet they placed before the croupier looking at their hand. As a rule it is essential to inquire with the croupier for clarification on the blackjack table game rules or check out the game rules section on the online betting house you are betting on.

Insurance: When the dealers face up card is an Ace players have the option to purchase insurance. You’ll lay half of the original wager prior to the dealer checking his cards; if the croupier has black jack you’ll come away with a win on the insurance bet but still lose the original bet. Sadly if the croupier does not have black jack the competitor loses the insurance. It is a risk but one that’s absolutely worth it, if used as part of a smart scheme.

Once a competitor has stood or busted by exceeding twenty-one the dealer will reveal his/her hand and will go on to deal himself cards until one of the following elements has happened: if they have achieved 17, a dealer won’t typically take another card because of the likelihood of busting, if he has drawn twenty-one or if they have busted.

Whether you are new to casino betting or a gambling old-timer, black jack is one of the easiest and most exciting games casinos have to offer. The goal in vingt-et-un is to beat the croupier by getting a hand value as near to twenty-one as possible and not going over. To bet on twenty-one, you only require a general understanding of the game rules and a desire to have fun.

So how do you reach twenty-one? In black jack, the cards have values. Numbered cards 2 through ten are valued at face value, while every face cards (King, Queen and Jack) are valued at 10 points. The ace card is a special card in black jack: you decide whether it is worth 1 or 11 points. Since casino players are dealt two cards to start, if you are dealt an ace and a face card or ten, you’ve achieved 21-an immediate success, as long as the dealer doesn’t get 21 as well. This two-card winning hand is called a "blackjack"; hence the name of the game!

Casino rules for black jack are basically the same at all betting houses. After you get your first 2 cards, your possibilities are to hit, hold, double down, split, or occasionally surrender.

When you participate in twenty-one at a casino, make sure to know which game table to pick. Most betting houses have color coded black jack tables according to the minimum bet the table accepts, normally 3 dollars, 5 dollars, $25 or one hundred dollars. In any betting house, it is a certainty the three dollar and 5 dollar tables will be filled, but they are great for novices at casino games considering that all of the cards are distributed face-up, instead of the one-up, one-down way at higher tables. So the upcoming instanceor the first instanceyou visit a betting house, make a stop at the twenty-one tables and aim for twenty-one!

The History of Black Jack

The casino game of Blackjack was introduced to the United States in the 19th century but it wasn’t until the mid 20th century that a system was developed to defeat the casino in black jack. This article is going to take a swift peak at the development of that strategy, Counting Cards.

When wagering was authorized in Nevada in ‘34, twenty-one screamed into recognition and was most commonly played with one or two decks. Roger Baldwin published a paper in 1956 which detailed how to lower the casino advantage based on odds and performance history which was very bewildering for individuals who weren’t mathematicians.

In 1962, Dr. Edward O. Thorp utilized an IBM 704 computer to refine the mathematical strategy in Baldwin’s paper and also created the 1st card counting techniques. Dr. Ed Thorp authored a book called "Beat the Dealer" which outlined card counting strategies and the tactics for lowering the casino advantage.

This spawned a massive increase in black jack competitors at the US casinos who were attempting to implement Dr. Thorp’s tactics, much to the alarm of the casinos. The system was not easy to comprehend and difficult to carry through and therefore elevated the earnings for the casinos as more and more people took to gambling on chemin de fer.

However this massive increase in earnings was not to continue as the players became more sophisticated and more accomplished and the system was further improved. In the 80’s a bunch of students from Massachusetts Institute of Technology made counting cards a part of the regular vernacular. Since then the casinos have introduced countless methods to thwart card counters including (but not limited to), multiple decks, shoes, constant shuffle machines, and speculation has it, sophisticated computer software to observe actions and detect "cheaters". While not illegal being caught counting cards will get you blocked from all brick and mortar casinos in sin city.
